Al-Udeid Air Base

The largest US military base in the middle east. The base also has the longest runway in the gulf.
The base can house over 10,000 troops, and hold up about 100 aircrafts.
In 2003, US troops moved from Prince Sultan Air Base to Al Udeid Air Base, to continue with the joint military opperation that will facilitate US military movements in the Iraq Campaign.

Analysis

In the year 2003, Qatar spent over $1 billion building and expanding the Al-Udeid Air Base, and housed US troops to facilitate control over Iraq. This might have been both beneficial and non-beneficial for Qatar. This was a good thing because it allowed good communication with the US which is a great military power, so in conflicts, Qatar will be able to count on support from the US. However, this was a risky move for Qatar to do because of its close land with Iraq. When Qatar helped the US, Iraq saw Qatar as a friend of their enemy, this could tighten relations between both countries. One of the ways in which people in Qatar were affected socially during the Iraq war were the conditions Al Udeid base provided its people. There have been reports of poor conditions in the Al Udeid base such as mold, excess of rainwater and dust, and an abundance of flies in the place. It is important for officials in the base to consider these problems and provide better conditions to the crew. This is important because in order to maintain a healthy army, adequate conditions are needed.
