Qatar Essay
Throughout the world’s history, since the beginning of time, injustice has taken place. To this day we can still witness injustice, and the sad part is, that there will always be injustice. There are many forms of injustice though, and the one that will be talked about today is oppression. But why? Well, it is because this essay will be based on voice, on people’s voice that was oppressed, and others who wasn’t. This essay is written based on Qatar’s people, and how they have affected socially, economically, and politically after 1945.
The first part this essay will go through is the economical part. The majority of Qatar’s economy is based of oil, and there is a particular man to thank this for, his name is Frank Holmes. In the Middle East, Mr. Holmes was considered the “Father of Oil”, he received his name because he carried on numerous researches along the gulf countries for oil. It wasn’t until 1939 that oil in Qatar was discovered. The major turning point for Qatar’s economy was in 1949, this was the year in which Qatar started to export its oil. To the day, oil has had an immense demand because it is one of the most useful materials known to humans. Qatar was once a poor nation among the gulf countries, but ever since humans had the immense craving for oil, its demands has grown, and Qatar’s oil business made the country’s economy grow exponentially, so much, that through the years Qatar has become one of the wealthiest countries in the world. It is amazing how such a poor country became one of the richest ones in less than a century.
This essay will now proceed to the political part. Qatar’s political history since the 20th century has been very interesting. It all started with a deal. In 1916, Qatar signed a deal with Britain, in which Qatar would be under British control, and in exchange Qatar would receive protection from the British. This may be considered a smart move for Qatar, because the deal was signed during World War I. During this time Qatar was poor and lacked in territory, so it was a great satisfaction to be under British protection during that time. The same goes for World War II, during this time oil had already been discovered in Qatar but it was not sufficient to provide adequate resources to the country, so once again Qatar had nothing to rely on except for the British during these times. Qatar had a lot of appreciation to Britain for many years but it was time to move on, Qatar was no longer see as a poor nation after its oil discovery and the British held them down, so it was a great relief when Britain announced that it would withdraw its forces from all the gulf countries in 1968. Even better, Qatar became an independent country in 1971. Soon after, the Al Thani family took the power. To this day, the Al Thani’s have taken good care of the nation. Qatar has proven to the world that even with its small amount of land, the country can still provide for themselves perfectly.
The final part of the essay will focus on the social part. In 2003, Qatar spent over
$1 billion constructing and expanding a qatari military base, known as Al-Udeid Air Base. Qatar’s plans on the base were to provide support to the US, a country that had recently gotten into war in Iraq. So far, this essay has explained how Qatar is a country with almost no problems, but sadly, this is the breaking point. There have been reports of poor conditions in the Al-Udeid Air base. There were cases of mold, excess in dust and rainwater, also an abundance of mosquitoes, and poor water services. It is sad to hear about people working in poor conditions. But it is especially bothering to hear it happen to soldiers. Why? Because soldiers are the ones who protect the citizens of a country and we must honor them and appreciate in every single way possible. It's almost a disgrace to see such honorable people treated under such poor conditions.
When it comes to understanding a country's development, it is important to think about the aspects that make up a country, in the case of this essay, they are the economy, government, and the people. Analyzing the political, social, and economical changes in the country will facilitate the understanding of how Qatar has developed since the last century. From what is written above, the reader can understand that Qatar has changed in a positive way because it started out as being a small and poor country, and now it has one of the richest economies on earth.
