Power and Oppresion

Qatar is a country who's government is an absolute monarchy. Qatar is also part of the Emirates, which are nations ruled by an all powerful leader called an Emir. The Emir comes from a royal family, and in Qatar the royal family is the Al Thani family. Since Qatar's independence, there have been 3 Emirs, the first one being the one who was chosen in 1972, later to be deposed by his son, to rule until 2013, were a new Emir took power. One of the ways in which people in Qatar are oppressed, or limited is that same-sex marriage is illegal. Even for immigrants, any form of homosexual relationships are badly seen.

This part of my research will answer the political part of my guiding question. The reason to why I based this analysis on the political side of my research is because the majority of Qatar’s independence and british rule had to do with politics. In 1916, Qatar signed a deal with Britain that would get Qatar under the British rule in exchange for protection. This was a smart move because it provided protection Qatar during both world wars. This was beneficial to Qatar since the country was a small nation surrounded by great middle eastern powers back then, and with Britain being one of the greatest empires on earth, the country was well protected. However, Britain's rule over Qatar might have been helpful at first, but stressful later, that is why Britain’s announcement to withdraw its forces from all the gulf nations must have been a relief to Qatar. Qatar has proven its people are satisfied with their government, because through the years there hasn’t been a major uprising in power and the government system has stayed the same.
